These include community building (creating gardens, painting, etc.), computer training for students and teachers, and environmental training. They will be going from June 20th-July 7th.

January 30, 2008

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We have just completed the second quarter and we are half way through the academic year. Many of our students are very successful. All our seniors have completed most of their applications for college. A number have already been accepted at major colleges. We are proud of all of them. We hope we will have an increase in the number of students who make the second quarter Honor Roll. We want and believe all our students can and should make the Honor Roll, but it is hard work.

Reports Cards

Second Quarter report cards have been mailed home. Review carefully the grade and the comments with your child. If your child received a C or lower, comments should explain why your child did not do well and the steps your child must make to improve. A teacher should be able to provide parents and scholars, at their request, a print out of how each grade was calculated. Please feel free to contact any teacher. If you have any difficulty contacting a teacher please contact Mr. Martinez, Mr. Spears, or me.

Parent Teacher Conferences: February 6 4:30-7:00pm

Parents can meet with individual teachers to get a clearer idea of their child’s progress in each class by meeting face to face with the classroom teacher. It is important that you try to meet with teachers. You may also receive your child’s attendance record for the first half of the year.

Attendance and Hard Work

Your child must be in school every day. Your child will not pass if he/she has poor attendance. Only in extreme emergencies should a child miss school or any class. Remember that if your child has been absent for 25 days for any reason other than long-term medical issues, he/she may be retained. If your child has less than 90% attendance we will notify you and we may notify proper DC authorities.

Poor attendance and missing or incomplete assignments are the primary reason why students perform poorly. Parental supervision, interest and support of studies will help overcome these problems.

Depending on the grade-level, your child should be spending anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours a night studying. If your child does not have specific assignments to do, he/she should review material or read a book during this time. For your child to learn, there is no alternative to hard work. We offer a number of support programs to help your child complete their work at school:

After School Help: Each teacher has after school help hours. You child should stay at least once a week with a teacher in a class in which they are having difficulty.

Tutoring Study Halls: Tuesdays-Thursdays after school, three tutoring organizations are at school premises to help students with their homework. Please contact Mr. Gunthrope with any questions.

Saturday Academy. We have piloted a program where selected 9th grade students attend Saturdays to work on math. We hope to expand this program in the future.

DC CAS Prep for 10th Graders

  • Mandatory After School Sessions: The math department will select students who need extra time learning math to reach proficiency in order to pass Math and be successful with DC CAS Test in April. If your child needs such support we will be sending a letter shortly. We expect all students selected attend the after school sessions
  • Mondays. Every other Monday selected 10th grade students will be required to stay to work on math and prepare for the DC CAS Test in April.

After School Activities

If your child is to be successful you must encourage him or her to be a full participant in the life of the school. You child should be engaged in after school activities, sports and attendance at special events. In the second semester we are offering new Robotics Club, Dance Group, Male Group, Rugby for men and Women, and Musical Theater in addition to our other clubs.

Upcoming Events

  • February 1: Dance at Parkside Campus. 7pm—10pm Transportation provided to metro.
  • February 6: Parent Teacher Conferences: 4:30-7:00pm
  • February 6: Watch on School TV the Wizards play the 76ers. For every point the top two Wizards score Chavez CH will receive a $100!
  • February 15: School Valentine Party 1:30-3:30
  • February 15-17: School Ski Weekend
  • Black History Celebration and Dinner 6:00-8:pm, February 27th

Thank you for giving us the honor of teaching you child and working with you to support your child with their goals and dreams.

Sincerely,

Garrett Phelan, Principal
