Capitol Hill Highlights

Letter to Parents January 31st, 2007

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Please find enclosed the midyear report card. The midyear grade is the grade that combines the first quarter grade, the second quarter grade and the midyear exam grade. It indicates where your child is half way through the academic year. We were very pleased with the attitude and focus of the majority of our students during exam time. Only 3 to 4 students per day were absent during the three days of exams. Those students were severely ill and brought in doctor’s notes to attest to the fact. We encourage all parents/guardians to treat every school day as if it were midyear or final exams. Each day is important!

We have 21 students who have perfect attendance for the half-year. Almost every one of those students is on the Honor Roll. Can your child be one of the ones with perfect attendance for the second half of the year?

Attendance and Homework

The biggest obstacles to student achievement, continues to be too many absences and students who do not do homework. Three simple guides can be followed to ensure success for your child—1) come to school, 2) pay attention in class and 3) complete and submit homework on time.

Tutors, After School Help and Study Hall

If your child needs extra help or a place to work quietly after school we provide it. Each teacher is obligated to have tutorial times after school each week. We have mailed home and posted on our web page teachers’ after school hours. Many teachers also give extra help before school or during lunch. Please make sure your child take advantage of our faculty and gets all the help offered. We do have a limited number of tutors who provide additional one-on-one help. Please contact Mr. Spears to see if we can provide a tutor.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 4pm-6pm

Please attend the parent-teacher conferences. During the evening you will have the opportunity to have a short meeting with each of your child’s teachers. Additionally, you can talk to our support services personnel such as our discipline staff, mental health staff, special education staff and the college counselor. We plan to have the midyear Honor Roll posted by Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Parent Association Meeting February 21, 2007 6-7:30pm.

Black Experience Celebration and Dinner February 27, 2007 5:30-7:30pm

Join us at the Black Experience Celebration and Dinner to celebrate the contributions that people of African Descent have made to this country. The celebration will provide everyone the opportunity to get to know aspects of the culture from different African countries as well. Dinner will be provided for your enjoyment and we hope to see everyone there.

Conclusion: Seniors have begun to be accepted to colleges. It is very exciting. Most will have to wait until March or April to hear from all their colleges. We are very proud of our seniors and what they have accomplished at Chavez. Unfortunately, many of their friends and peers did not stick with school or buy into our values and vision. Parents of underclassmen, please help us serve all our students, all your children, by supporting us in our goal to have every student stay in school, buy into the Chavez community and graduate and go to the college of your choice.

Please feel free to contact me Mr.Spears, the Vice Principal, or Mr. Martinez, the Academic Dean, or me if you have any questions or concerns or if you need help to make sure your child is served well by our school.

Sincerely,
Garrett Phelan
Principal
