Capitol Hill Highlights

Letter to Parents April 11th, 2007

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

Please find enclosed the 3rd quarter report card. The 4th and final quarter ends May 25th and Final Exams are May 29-May 31. In June we have our Public Policy courses. Most of our seniors have already been accepted to college. The academic year is rapidly coming to a close. We want the end of the year to be a celebration of our student’s successes. Students who have struggled have to make a supreme effort and make sacrifices if they want to move on to the next level. In a few weeks it will be too late!

All teachers provide extra help after school. We have tried to provide students with tutors if they want one and are conscientious about showing up to work with the tutor. As I have stated in every letter, it is important that your child be in school every day.

Parent -Teacher Conferences April 18, 4:30pm-7pm

Please attend the parent-teacher conferences. During the evening you will have the opportunity to have a short meeting with each of your child’s teachers. Additionally, you can talk to our support services personal such as our discipline staff, mental health staff, special education staff and the college counselor. We plan to have the 3rd Quarter Honor Roll posted. This will be the last conference of the year. Please make every effort to touch base with your child’s teachers.

DC CAS TEST APRIL 17th-APRIL 20th VERY IMPORTANT

All 10th graders must take the DCCAS Test. Testing will occur April 17th-April 20th.

School will start at the regular time, but we will have a special schedule and students will be let out at different times each day, due to the schedule of the test.

  • Monday: 8:45AM – 1:20PM
  • Tuesday: 8:45AM – 2:30PM
  • Wednesday: 8:45AM – 1:50PM
  • Thursday: 8:45AM – 1:30PM
  • Friday: 8:45AM – 12:30PM

No 10th grade student can be absent during this time. If a student is absent he/she must be for a documented emergency with a note from a doctor. That student will have to miss important class time the following week to make up the exam.

This is an important time for your child and our school. We want to demonstrate that our students are great students. Please make sure your child comes to school every day prepared to give their best effort.

9th and 11th grade students will also be tested. 9th graders will have a DC CAS prep test.

11th graders will review their PSAT Test from earlier in the year and take a practice SAT Test in preparation for the SAT Test. 12th graders will focus intensely on Thesis paper and in preparation for Thesis Presentations.

Unsung Heroes Banquet May 1, 6:00-8:00

All Foundations in History students are exploring the concept of the “hero” and writing essays about their “unsung heroes.” The school is hosting a banquet to honor the people who have helped our students succeed with a program and dinner.

Next Year Changes at Chavez Capitol Hill

Course Specific Study Halls Each Day

In the additional 45 minutes of class time each day students will have a course specific study hall. For example one day a student will take math and after math class will have a 45-minute math study hall. This will enable the student to start their homework under their teacher’s guidance, catch up on work missed, or get small group or one on one coaching from the math teacher. The next day the student will have English study hall with the English teacher and so on. I believe this will afford you child more course specific support during the week.

School Uniforms

Every student will be required to wear a school uniform. Please se the Uniform Policy enclosed. Seniors can choose not to wear the school uniform. If seniors choose not to wear the school uniform they must wear business casual that means no jeans or sneakers, belt with tucked in shirt, etc.
