Ise Lyfe visits Parkside

One of the nation’s premier spoken word Emcees, Ise Lyfe, from Oakland California, delivered a powerful spoken word workshop with forty high school students in honor of our Black History Month celebration on February 29th 2008. Fusing the art of Spoken Word and Hip Hop, Ise Lyfe has opened for Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, KRS-ONE, Saul Williams, Dead Prez, Ben Harper and more. The 25 year old has also been a featured poet on Russell Simmon’s HBO Def Poetry Jam and was hailed as one of the Bay Area’s Top 25 under 35.
The scholars were incredibly engaged and learned a lot from the workshop. They created many personal free writes and learned a lot about a variety of social issues including education, power, drugs, race, stereotypes, diversity, the media, poverty, misogyny, patriarchy, homophobia, racism, police brutality, youth violence, and the parallel lives of Tupac and Malcolm X. Many scholars shared their personal stories and their poetry, and it was a very moving day.
Each scholar had about 5 minutes to free write to each of the prompts in bold below throughout the day. At the very end, scholars raised their hands and shared sections or words of their own pieces, and everything was copied down onto the board. Each word or phrase from this group poem is from a different scholar who shared a fragment of their piece.
Therefore, the poem represents fragmented pieces, thoughts, and words, from about 20 people, and yet, when compiled, also seems to hold together strongly.
Group Free Write: Spoken Word From Ise Lyfe and Chavez Scholars
They see young, black, doing what we can.
Another female destined to be
another statistic.
Naive.
Someone dying,
but I got a lot to live for.
My father was 21 when he died.
I am that.
Nobody can tell me different,
a black girl.
Critically acclaimed higher heights,
Intelligent.
I wrote a force, a torch, a flame,
My hair coarse.
Surpassing Others.
I am Smarter than the Average Bear Because
I’m free,
Not boxed.
My choice,
Not a zoo but I wake up to a zoo every day.
I am not a bear.
My people now regaining insight,
I am my Mother’s child,
No whore,
somebody important,
that grew up,
still a baby in the eyes of,
The Street took me in.
Peace and Love.
I am my own obstacle.

Chavez Parkside Alumna, Adriana Gonzales Rodriquez (2007), was recently selected by the congressional office to do an internship with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s office starting in January 2009. This is a highly competitive internship. Adriana is currently a freshman at Trinity in DC. Adriana was also the recipient of the Irasema Salcido Public Policy Scholarship last year for her commitment to the school’s vision – and this internship proves again that she is determined to lead and make a difference through public policy.
