Dear Parent/Guardian,
As many of you know, Chavez is putting a lot of emphasis on homework. We truly believe in the power of reinforcement and independent work. With that said, the teachers of all 10th, 11th, and 12th graders have come together create a homework completion initiative.
Our Program The goal is for all scholars in the 10th, 11th and 12th grade to have a personal homework completion rate of 85%. We also would like to see an 85% completion rate for each grade level. To assist scholars in reaching that goal we have omitted Advisory and replaced that time period with Study Hall. So each child will have a half an hour a day at least three days a week to work on their homework. In the event that scholars will need help on their homework assignments from another teacher a system has been put in place to allow that to happen.
Data will be collected at the end of every two weeks for each scholar. Those that do not have an overall completion rate of 85% will have to stay after school in study hall for at least two weeks or until their homework completion rate improves-beginning Tuesday, February 19, 2008. A parent meeting will be held for those that neglect to attend homework hall, and for those that consistently fall below 85%. The purpose of the meeting will be to investigate why the scholar is not completing homework, and to devise a plan to help the scholar.
We believe that our scholars can be successful; therefore we have a reward system in place for those that improve their rate of completion and those that consistently meet the goal. Rewards include having their names on the wall, lunch, tickets to movies and/or games, dress down days, field trips and more. We will explain the details of the reward system to the scholars during this week.
This initiative is very important to Chavez and your support will be invaluable. It has been a pleasure working with each of you thus far and we look forward to continuing to work together. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Ms. Wilson at 202.398.2230 or via email at kenya.wilson@chavezschools.org.
